Dear Captain,
Firstly, a very Happy New Year to you from your President, Roy Parmiter, and the rest of the SGC Exec Committee. This short update will hopefully find you in good health after an enjoyable festive season and already looking forward to the weather improving for our 2024 events and fixtures.
62nd Annual Dinner – March 1st 2024
Our Captain Elect, Mike Rossiter, will be issuing the details for the 2024 Dinner early in January. Look out for his email, and please try to work through a single golf club coordinator rather than booking on an individual basis.
Selection 2024
The process will be very much the same as last year, with a period of time being allocated for you all to indicate your availability before the Selection Team sits down to finalise the teams at the beginning of April. Please note that this year, you will only be asked to notify availability for matches – the Spring and Autumn Meetings and the Invitation Day will all be notified separately so that our Secretary, Clive Stilwell, can arrange tee times and groupings more easily. Clive will be in touch with you all about the Spring Meeting early in 2024 (the date of the Spring Meeting and AGM is Thursday 11th April 2024).
Membership Database
You might be surprised to hear that we don’t actually have a database of all the SGC Captains. Most of the details we need are saved against a secure record on the website, but not all the information is easily accessible. For that reason, our Web Manager, Ian Gover, has been developing a simple database on Excel which we can develop to ensure we have the right information and the ability to use it for the purposes of Somerset Golf Captains. A key issue will be data accuracy, and we will be asking for a Captain from each club to help us ensure that our data is accurate and up to date. The last thing we want to do is send emails to Captains who no longer wish to receive them or miss anyone off an important message!
Match Managers
Following some changes to the way matches are administered and payments are collected, we have made the role of the Match Manager an important and very proactive part of fielding our teams for matches, including making sure that we communicate early with our opposition and that match fees are collected in advance which helps to ensure that the selected team actually turns up!
If you would like to be a Match Manager, please email Clive at the usual address (secretary@somersetgolfcaptains.co.uk) and he will send you the task sheet so that you can decide if this is something that you would like to do.
The SGC Exec Committee looks forward to seeing you in 2024.
Kind regards
Clive Stilwell
