Our History

On the 15th November 1962, a letter was sent to 150 Captains of Somerset Golf Clubs stating the intention of forming a Somerset Golf Captains’ Society. The response to the letter was encouraging as about 60 positive replies were received.

A meeting was therefore called, to be held at the Weston-super-Mare Golf Club on Sunday 9th December 1962. Twenty three past and present Captains attended with apologies from a further twenty one.

Mr J.H. Stevens, President of Weston-super-Mare Golf Club, was asked to chair the meeting. After discussion Mr P.V. Roberts proposed and Mr A.T. Laws seconded a proposal to form the Society. This was carried.

The Society Rules were then drawn up and the Life Membership Fee set at three guineas.

The following Officers were duly elected:-
President:- Mr J.S. Ireland, Saltford
Vice-Presidents:- Mr A.T. Laws, Burnham & Berrow
Mr L.P. Wallen, Taunton & Pickeridge
Captain 1963:- Mr D.G. Hood Wright, Weston-super-Mare
Hon.Secretary & Treasurer:- Mr W.E. Woodman, Weston-s-Mare

The meeting was closed with a vote of thanks to the Weston-super-Mare Golf Club for allowing the meeting to take place there and to Mr J.H. Stevens for taking the chair.
