Roy Walker the Star of 2023 Dinner!

Somerset Golf Captains held its 61st Anniversary Dinner on Friday, the 3rd of March 2023 at Taunton Rugby Club.

One hundred and seventeen Somerset Captains and guests had a memorable night, renewing old acquaintances and appreciating the priceless humour of a great stand-up comedian and top quality performer.

The evening started with a delicious five course meal with a choice of :

  • Duck and orange pate, or Smoked chicken salad
  • Prune and Armagnac stuffed loin of pork, or Pan -fried salmon fillet
  • Irish liqueur torte, or Peach melba cheesecake
  • Cheese and biscuits for the table
  • Tea/Coffee

The evening was punctuated by speeches from various officers, including immediate past captain Stephen Butterfield, who delivered a witty golf related grace before the meal started. Then President Bob Acland welcomed guests and proposed the loyal toast. He also presented apologies from Past President Trevor Jenkins, and from several captains from Saltford Golf Club who had attended the England Golf awards in Manchester on the previous evening to support their colleague, David Phillips, who won the lifetime achievement award for his services to junior golf at Saltford. Captain of Captains Rob Ford reviewed the 2023 season and reminded his colleagues of some of the highlights of his most enjoyable year.

However, the highlight of the evening undoubtedly was the expert delivery and thoroughly entertaining wit and comedy from Roy Walker. Roy related several anecdotes from his spell on TV as the host of Catchphrase, and the years he spent as part of the famous TV Comedians from previous years. Timing is everything in comedy, and Roy gave a masterclass of how to make people laugh with gentle humour and funny stories.

After the event, several people commented that this could well have been the best dinner ever, which just goes to show the quality is just as important as quantity.

We now look forward to the 2023 season and we hope that as many captains as possible will participate in the three internal events and the competitive fixtures against other counties. Full details are available elsewhere on the website

An event like this takes months and months of detailed preparation and organisation. And so, we must all express our thanks to dinner organiser and Captain-Elect David Bate for a job well done. A super evening thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who was there.

Thank you David.
