Captains retain the SGU trophy

Brean Golf Club was the venue for the annual fixture between Somerset Golf Captains and the Somerset Golf Union Executive on the 8th of September 2022. The teams were greeted with sunny spells but also some heavy rain.

Match One

Rob Ford and Brean Captain Peter Barton played against SGU President Tommy Tulk and past Captain of Captains Andy Carter. This was a very enjoyable game: Somerset Golf Captains relied on local knowledge and a local seagull which actually stole Andy Carter‘s best drive ! A win for Somerset Golf Captains by the margin of 4&3.

Match Two

Keri Allchurch and Richard Dore played against Paddy Maclennan and Alex Kidd. This was a tale of two putters for the Captains: one was red-hot and the other ice-cold!  Together, however, they were warm enough to edge the match against the current and immediate past captains of Somerest Seniors in a match played in a wonderful spirit. Another win for Somerset Golf Captains by the margin of 3&2.

Match Three

In match three, Jim Boyce and David Morgan played against Norman Banfield and Jim Skinner. This was a great game with some great company. Jim Boyce had a good day with his putter when needed and no clubs were thrown by the opponents!  Everyone played in a great spirit with the Golf Captains running out as winners by the margin of 2&1.

Match Four

In match four, Jeff Saunders and Marcus Woodward played against Graham Yates and Barry Lake. Everyone had a great game with some very good company. The course was in nice condition and a pleasure to play. Marcus played very well and Somerset Golf Captains came home with a victory by the margin of 2&1.

Match Five

In match five Glyn Sewell and Andy Towens played against John Parker and Ian Poole. This was a closer match than the result suggests. After a slow start, Andy and Glyn managed to get into the lead. John and Ian didn’t do much wrong but Andy’s detailed knowledge of the course enabled the Captains to secure a win by the margin of 4&3.

Match Six

Last, but not least, in match six,  Vice President and match-manager Roy Parmiter played with Paul Chesney against Mark Biddle and Richard Dix.  This was a very close front nine with both teams having the lead and all square at the turn.  Roy and Paul then dovetailed well to win 11, 12 and 13 and eventually ran out as winners by the margin of 4&2.

And so on completion of all six matches the overall result was:

Somerset Golf Captains 6 , Somerset Golf Union Executive 0 ; and the Somerset Golf Captains retained the trophy for another year.

The course as in great condition and the catering was superb. Thanks to Paul Chesney for the photos of half a pig on his plate!

Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal after the golf and we look forward to renewing the competition next year.
