Narrow defeat to South Wales Coast

A dry and sunny day welcomed Somerset Golf Captains and their friends from South Wales Coast Golf Captains to Taunton & Pickeridge Golf Club on the 12th of September 2022.

Match one

Iain Robertson played against Colin Champ in a friendly two-ball with lots of chat and “putting the world to rights”! A lovely day resulting in a half for both teams!

Match two

Roy Parmiter and Bob Acland played against Viv and Wyne. A game of two halves! South Wales Coast played very well and Somerset Golf Captains were three down at the turn; but fought back to be “all square” before Viv and Wayne pulled away to win by 2&1. Played in true Captains spirit and great company all the way round.

Much Three

David Bate and T&P Captain Rob Darvell played against South Wales Coast Captain Dilwyn and Mike. The game started “net birdy”, “birdy”, “birdy”. Somerset Golf Captains then settled down to a match played in good spirits and good company. A fair result would have been a half – but the South Wales Coast boys both went out of bounds on the last hole; and Somerset won by being 1 up at the end.

Match four

Glyn Sewell and John Godley played against John Linton and Jeff Price. A close match throughout with holes being exchanged through the first nine. Closer on the back nine, but (despite not getting as many birdies as John and Jeff) Somerset managed to win the 17th,  and then scrape a half on the last to win by being 1 up. Played in great spirit even though 50% of the group were from Yorkshire!

Match five

Murray Parsons and Keri Allchurch got off to a fast start and were four up after four; and their opponents played dogged par and bogey golf to get it back to one : before a Murray surge saw Somerset home by 2&1.  Give that man a coconut.

Match six

Scott McKechnie and Mike Rossiter played against Graham and Andrew. A thoroughly enjoyable match; close all the way round! Our visitors were very steady and if only Scott could putt, it would’ve been very different!  Great fun but a victory for South Wales coast by the margin of 2&1.

Match Seven

Phil Barrett and Stephen Parker enjoyed an excellent game. Somerset Golf Captains were never ahead in the game but ended up losing 2&1. Bill and Richard were competitive and exceptional. Great Company.

Match Eight

Keith Wiggins and Rich Bartin enjoyed a great match and there was never more than one in it until the 16th. (Rich carried Keith up until then!!)  but Somerset lost by a margin of 2&1.

And so, on completion of all eight games the overall result was Somerset Golf Captains 3 1/2 south Wales coast Captains 4 1/2.

Careful readers will notice that Somerset Golf Captains Captain of Captains Rob Ford missed the golf  – after he realised he had the wrong date in his diary! Rob joined the match as soon as he could; took some photographs and stayed for the meal.

We would like to thank Taunton & Pickeridge Golf Club for looking after us so well. The course was in great condition and the catering superb.
