Ladies win at Worlebury

Worlebury Golf Club was the venue for the annual fixture between Somerset Golf Captains and the Somerset Ladies Past Captains Association.

Match One

Rob Ford and Peter Phillips played against Di Yates  and Jan Uhl. This match started with loud compliments and ended with not so polite comments under the captain‘s breath. The match finished all square.

Match two

Club Captain Barry Saunders and Jim Boyce played against Janet Fear and Janet Chapple. A great game which was close on the front nine. The ladies made a run into the lead on the back nine. The chaps then pulled it back and holes were swopped until the 18th. A good half for both teams

Match three

Matt Lazenby and Colin Mantle played against Sally Dymock and Sue Freestone. It was an enjoyable game and although losing two down at the end Somerset were beaten by the better team. It has been suggested that both ladies should be referred to the handicap committee.

Much four

Graham Load and Colin Davies played against Helen Clarke and Carole Nowers. This was a very close encounter with the ladies opposition clearly using their handicap allowance to their advantage – despite the Captains’ general excellent play. Well done to the ladies for a 2&1 victory.

Match five

David Bate and Jeff Saunders played against her Eliza Vail and Gwen Cavill. Great company played in a good spirits. The girls made some great shots and the match was enjoyed by all. A win for Somerset by the margin of 4&3.

Match six

Bob Acland and Ian Suttle played against Linda Johnson and Yvonne Bate. Linda and Yvonne proved too strong putting like demons and dovetailing very well. Bob and Ian fought hard and played well but the girls were top on the day to secure a 3&2 victory for the ladies.

Match seven

Match manager David Andow and Paul Burns played against Sandra Ford and Sylvie Coache Tucker. A great game and company but the ladies were far too good for the Somerset Golf Captains pair and won 4&3. Better luck next time if picked. (Sylvie needs to be referred to the handicap committee!)

Match eight

Last but not least, Phil Slater and Mike Snaith played against Sue Acland and Virginia Suttle. Sue and Virginia got off to a slow start and was soon three down. However by the 12th hole the match was all square. Thereafter the golf was nip and tuck until the ladies tired towards the end. Great fun and a victory for Somerset by the margin of 3&2.

There was some confusion after the match when it was announced at the match had finished as a draw! But, as the reports above show, and so on completion of all eight games, the score was:

Somerset Golf Captains 3 Somerset Ladies Past Captains Association 5.

We would like to thank Worlebury Golf Club for their superb hospitality. Course was in great condition and food was superb.

We would also like to thank our match manager David Andow for his organisation, which included finding several reserves at short notice.
