SGC Newsletter – July 2023

Our season is progressing at an alarming rate, and we have only eight regular fixtures remaining! So far, our nine County matches have resulted in four halves, two wins and three losses. Not the sort of form to get anyone sacked in football terms, but hardly Champions League qualification either! Our next fixture is against the South West Golf Club Managers at Sherborne on Monday 24th July where we are hoping to improve our win rate.
The matches have continued to be close affairs – a 4-2 loss on the first of the Tour matches at Shropshire and Hereford and a narrow 4½ – 3½ loss to Gloucestershire being our only setbacks. The wins at home to Wiltshire and away at Worcestershire were also by a single point, so we have been involved in some closely fought and exciting matches.

COMMITTEE AND ADMIN NEWS
Away from the golf course, our thanks go to you all as well as our Match Managers for embracing the changes to an early email and BACS payment for matches that make our jobs as volunteers so much easier. Our Treasurer, Paul Chesney now has a SGC email address (treasurer@somersetgolfcaptains.co.uk) so you can contact him directly about any financial matters.

CAPTAINS INVITATION AT OAKE MANOR – 20TH JUNE 2023
Many thanks to all of you who supported this event which seemed to be another very successful and enjoyable day. Well done to everyone at Oake Manor for looking after us so well.
In total, 46 Somerset Captains and 46 guests competed in the 2,3,4 Bowmaker format. My thanks to Ben Gliddon who helped me on the day with a long stint of starting and we look forward to seeing him later in the season when, hopefully, he will be fit to play!
The Worlebury team of Phil Stone and guest Martin Morgan and Graham Hewlett and guest Andy Judkins posted a remarkable score of 141 points to win the event. And there were two holes in one on the same day! Steve Chinnock aced the long Par 3 10th hole and as news of his feat spread, Maddie Casson made another hole in one on the 16th. Captain of Captains David Bate presented Maddie and Steve with a small memento of their achievement at the prize giving – congratulations to Steve and Maddie from SGC!

CLOTHING
So far, I have had no requests for the new ProQuip short-sleeved rain jacket, so I have not yet placed an order. As we have been able to keep the price the same (£56) I think they represent a great deal so if you are interested in ordering one, please let me know.

SALE!
Our SGC sweaters are now available at a reduced price as we prepare to bring some new lines to our clothing range for 2024. The long-sleeved sweater was £56 and is now available for £48 and the sleeveless was £50 and is now available for £42. Anyone ordering one of each will pay £80 for the two! Just let me know by email if you wish to place an order.
Our black golf caps are now out of stock, but I have been able to source a new one through Glenmuir. These won’t be available until early in 2024 which is a bit disappointing but as we will not be paying for the setting up of new embroidery, I think it will be worth the wait.

AUTUMN MEETING
I have reserved 60 spaces at Saltford Golf Club for our Autumn Meeting on Thursday 21st September. Remember, you will play with another Somerset Captain as your partner, and you will be able to enter on your own or as a pair.
The approximate timings will be to meet from 0900 onwards for coffee and bacon rolls, tee times from 1030 with 18 holes 4BBB, a two-course running meal followed by prize giving. There will be skills and overall prizes for the day and the Griffith Trophy will be presented to the Captain with the best combined score for both the Spring and Autumn Meetings.
I am in the process of finalising meal choices and costs with Saltford. Once I have the full details, I will send out an email to all Captains, including those who have not expressed an interest, to see if we can fill all the spaces.

STOP PRESS – The match against Somerset Golf Union on Friday 15th September is being rearranged to a diary clash for SGU. We will keep the selected team informed with any new date that can be found.

Kind regards and good golfing,
