The annual match between Somerset Golf Captains and Somerset Ladies Past Captains was held at Brean Golf Club and it proved to be a tight match, going down to the last group to decide the result. SGC fielded three Lady past Club Captains for what we believe was the first time.
The weather was kind with only a stiff breeze and some sunny intervals.
Maddie Casson was our Match Manager and sent out a strong looking team with Captain of Captains John Perkins and SGC and Brean stalwart Brian Reeves teeing off first. They faced Claire Biggs and Emma Smith in a match in which the SGC pair were outplayed with the Ladies using their shots to great effect. A “dog licence” defeat by 7&6 was the eventual outcome.
In Match 2, Andy Carter and Ian Suttle were up against Linda Johnson and Sue Acland. Andy played some very good golf but the Ladies took them all the way to the 18th with a halved match being the appropriate outcome.
Jackie Richards and Geoff Spinks were the pairing for SGC in Match 3 and were facing Heather Kerr- Wilbur and Ros gait. This game was also tight with the eventual outcome being a half on the 18th.
In Match 4, Bob Acland and Mike Snaith took on Terina Parker and Pauline Cornish. This match proved to be a tough one and the SGC pair had to work hard to earn their 1 up victory with Mike’s determination apparently proving to be the difference. The fact that Bob had to go home for his golf shoes which were actually in his car all the time did little to drag the boys down!
In Match 5, Angela Baker and Phil Stone were up against Lyn Bird and Virginia Suttle. Phil enjoyed the all Lady combination and along with Angela they came out narrow winners by 1 hole.
Match 6 saw Glyn Sewell and Tim Nicholls take on Di Yates and Pam Street. Despite their best efforts, the SGC pair could not shake off the Ladies and it was only a strong finish on the last 3 holes that saw them pull away for a 2&1 victory.
It was now 4 -2 to the SGC team and a rare win against the Ladies looked to be real possibility.
Match 7 pitched Match Manager Maddie Casson and Steve Leaver against Susie Gibbins and Gwen Cavill. Steve and Gwen were the strongest link in each team and although the SGC pair stuck to their task, Gwen had other ideas and the Ladies pulled away to win 4&2.
With the match still in the balance, Chris Reed and Martin Morgan took on Sally Dymock and Lyn Gridley. The Ladies proved to be very good around the greens which turned out to be the deciding factor as the SGC pair could not turn the game their way and the Ladies used their shots wisely to record a 2&1 win, levelling the match at 4-4.
John Perkins described the match as a very enjoyable one despite their hammering and Brean Golf Club did a fine job in hosting the event.
