Dear Captains
I hope you are all well and are enjoying the return to golf after the unprecedented events of the pandemic and the lockdown of recent months.
I would now like to bring you up-to-date with our plans to resume the season over the next few months, albeit in a very limited way.
CAPTAINS’ DAY
We were hoping to start on the 24th of July with a “Captains Invitation” at Long Sutton Golf Club. We have decided to rearrange this event by changing both the date and the format. The new date will be Friday 14th August: this gives the club an extra three weeks to develop its food and beverage provision. Furthermore, because we had to cancel the “Spring Meeting” in April, we have decided to rename the event for this year as a “Captains’ Day“ for all members of Somerset Golf Captains, but without guests at the moment. We would like to get as many Captains together at the earliest opportunity; to renew friendships; to enjoy a game of golf together; and to take advantage of the catering provision which Long Sutton Golf Club is able to offer at the time. And so, for this year only, the mid-season event will be for past and current captains. The format will be a bowmaker, played in teams of three or four depending on the number of entries we get. There are 60 places available. The cost of entry will be £30 per person; and this will include 18 holes of golf, a two course meal, prize fund, and a donation to the golf club. A new event has been created on the website and you can now register for the “Captains’ Day” through the website or by emailing me on secretary@somersetgolfcaptains.co.uk.
MATCHES
In terms of matches for the rest of the year, Gwent and Devon have definitely cancelled. But Dorset are willing to go ahead with our match on the 4th of August at Weymouth, subject to social distancing and some variation to the catering arrangements (for example, probably a barbecue or a buffet). We originally had 31 past captains register for this event, so we will pick a team from this list and you will be notified within the next seven days with regards to your selection. We will also contact Wells Captains, and the Somerset Ladies Past Captains, to discuss whether we can arrange any sort of match on the dates agreed.
AUTUMN MEETING
We still intend to proceed with the Autumn meeting at Worlebury on the 24th September. We will confirm the arrangements for this In due course but please register your interest on the website in the usual way
Best wishes and stay safe.
John Beer (Secretary)
