On the 4th August the Somerset Golf Captains visited Wells Golf Club for their annual visit against the Past Captains. The weather was not kind!
John Perkins played alongside Andy Carter in the first match played a great game in tough conditions. The Wells Captains continuing the recent history of this match ran out winning the match by 1 hole, reinforcing their strength on their own course.
Angela Baker and Ben Gliddon played through the rain and were in a strong position throughout the game. However the match finished with a half. Was this the way things were going to progress throughout the day?
David Willis and Dean Evans played in a great game in the 3rd match and although the opposition were solid and had a strong last 3 holes Somerset came out on top and won 3 and 2.
Now was the time for the Somerset Golf Captains to back up this win and Mark Necker and Michael Smith in the 4th match led early on in this match. The Wells Captains kept them in check and did not allow Somerset to run away with the very friendly match with Somerset finally winning 2 and 1.
In a very close match Maddie Casson and Murray Parsons alongside the Wells Captains with both teams playing some wonderful golf with Murray sinking some great putts. Somerset hang on by their fingernails to win by 1 hole.
The inclement weather got to the next group and the next group with Mike Rossiter and Stephen Butterfield agreeing a half with the Wells Captains. A graceful decision gleefully accepted by all.
Paul Hucker and Glyn Sewell exchanged holes on the front 9 with their opposition with both teams making most of their shots. Wells Captains continued with the use of their shots on the back nine and ended up winners 2up.
With the score now being 4 – 3, it now came down to the last group. Fortunately for Somerset they had Rob Hirons and Chris Reed who had age on their side and through the rain won their match 2 and 1.
A historic win for Somerset by 5 – 3!
As always a wonderful day, played in the best spirits and well supported by the club with good organisation and food.
