After a strong team talk the night before Somerset were prepared for a battle against Warwickshire on the second day of the tour.
Mike Rossiter was presented with a 14-hole card after his behaviour on the day before with many on the Somerset team thinking that this was as many holes as he was going to play. A membership form for Farrington Golf Club was also suggested.
After a good lunch John Perkins and Colin Davies played Ron Sewell and Angus Smith. Warwickshire were fast out of the blocks playing in a rainstorm that affected the first 6 holes. As the weather cleared John and Colin slotted in well and finally won 3 and 2.
Marcus Woodward and Maddie Casson won 2 and 1 against Paul Brindley and Rob Yewer. The Somerset pair enjoyed the excellent golf course and just managed to ‘get over the line’.
A brilliant 2 on the 5th from Glyn Sewell (playing with Rob Fear) did not prevent Somerset struggling with the greens and Jason Scagell and Mark Draper playing for Warks won 2 and 1.
Rob Ford and Martin Morgan played in a ‘nip and tuck’ game against Doug Hawkins and Ravi Baga. Played in great atmosphere Somerset were helped to relax to a 3 and 2 win.
Mike Rossiter, playing his first ‘delightful’ 18 holes of the tour, played with Geoff Rooke. They clawed their way back to be all square against Charles Leggitt and Rob Stokes but lost to a great birdie on the 18th.
Great company and the fantastic course led to a half with Matt Lazenby and Jeff Saunders sharing the honours with Patrick Murphy and Paul Wilkinson.
In the next match, the first hole was shared in birdies and so it went on! A generous half in a very close match all the way around between Paul Chesney and Rob Hirons for Somerset playing against Chris Oatley and Tony Ranger was the result.
Unfortunately Chris Reed had become ill and had had to go home. Warwickshire generously found a replacement. ‘Somerset’ Dave Saunders and Ian Gover played David Middleton and Ian Griffiths in the last match. In another match that was played in a wonderful atmosphere the ‘Somerset’ pair managed to win 3 and 1 after a good battle.
After playing on a good course and partaking in a great meal afterwards Somerset finished their unbeaten tour with a 5 and 3 result in this match.
As the trophy was glass, we had also saved on engraving again!
